The e-TOLL system at Autopay. Who is required to use it and on which roads?

e-TOLL in the Autopay fleet dashboard – coming soon

For transport companies, e-TOLL billing is currently yet another system to keep track of, alongside fuel cards, road tolls abroad and driver billing. We want to change that.

Soon, e-TOLL payments will be available directly via the Autopay fleet dashboard – in the same place where you manage other fleet services. This means that toll charges for toll roads will be displayed alongside other vehicle costs, making it easier to monitor expenditure, speeding up bookkeeping and reducing the number of systems the fleet department uses on a daily basis.

We will be announcing further details of this feature shortly. It’s worth keeping an eye on our news updates from today so that you can be among the first to find out when e-TOLL settlement becomes available in the Autopay dashboard.

What is the e-TOLL system?

e-TOLL is an electronic toll collection system for toll roads in Poland, administered by the National Revenue Administration. It replaced the previous viaTOLL system, which ceased operations on 30 November 2021. e-TOLL itself was launched on 24 June 2021 and was rolled out in stages, covering successive road sections and vehicle categories.

Unlike its predecessor, e-TOLL relies primarily on GNSS satellite positioning technology and data transmission, rather than solely on road toll gates. The vehicle’s route is recorded electronically, and the toll is calculated automatically for every kilometre travelled on a toll section – without the need to stop at toll collection points.

Who is required to use e-TOLL?

The requirement to use e-TOLL applies to lorries and vehicle combinations with a maximum authorised mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes, as well as buses, regardless of their mass.

For this group, registration with the e-TOLL system and payment of a charge for every kilometre travelled on a toll section are compulsory. This applies to both Polish and foreign hauliers travelling on Polish roads.

Vehicles belonging to uniformed and emergency services, such as the police, the fire brigade and the ambulance service, may be exempt from the charge or part of it. Under regulations promoting electromobility, exemptions may also apply to certain low- and zero-emission vehicles. It is always worth checking the current regulation for a detailed list, as this may change.

On which roads is e-TOLL in force?

For heavy goods vehicles The system comprises an extensive network of toll national roads managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) – motorways, expressways and selected sections of national roads of the greatest importance for heavy goods transport.

This network is being gradually expanded, so drivers and hauliers should regularly check the up-to-date map of toll roads published on the official e-TOLL website, particularly before undertaking long journeys or travelling through several provinces.

As the list of toll sections changes as new roads are opened to traffic, the most reliable source of up-to-date information remains the website etoll.gov.pl and the e-TOLL PL mobile app, which display a real-time map.

Summary

e-TOLL is currently the main road toll collection system in Poland for heavy goods vehicle operators. Understanding the rules – who is subject to the obligation, which roads are covered and how to settle the charges correctly – helps to avoid fines and unnecessary costs.

Very soon, thanks to integration with the Autopay fleet management portal, e-TOLL billing will become even simpler. Stay up to date with us!
